You could say his wife died after 1846, but I think you should earmark Josephine as a possible granddaughter, instead of a daughter. Just a hunch....

I've used Black and Decker tools before and I've found they are quite good and usually last a long time. Your sander could be choked up with sawdust and might come good if you clean it, but it sounds like it broken. This type of tool isn't designed to have any maintenance so don't bother trying to oil it. If it is broken, I suggest you throw it away and get another one. The cost of getting the tool repaired is usually more than the tools worth....
